Schools should have clear, written guidelines for staff to follow when a child is in need of personal care / toileting to ensure that correct procedures are followed. Parents should be aware of the school’s procedures.

All children have a right to safety, privacy and dignity when personal care / toileting procedures are carried out and this should be reflected in an individual toilet – management plan.  The plan should be drawn up and agreed with parents and healthcare professionals  for all children who require intimate care on a regular basis.
